Show Preview: Traditional Building Exhibition
and Conference

Chicago, Oct. 20-23, at the Historic Navy Pier

The 2010 Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference will be held October 20-23 at Chicago’s Navy Pier. This year’s conference, “Growing Green: Traditional Building and Sustainable Development,” will feature more than 60 seminars, workshops and tours and offer 24 CEUs. Topics to be covered include historic tax credits, window restoration, life-cycle maintenance, LEED for historic building, adaptive reuse and sympathetic additions.

“‘Growing Green: Traditional Building and Sustainable Development’ means many things,” says Judy Hayward, Restore Media education director, “including applying what is inherently energy efficient and sustainable about historic buildings to traditionally inspired new construction; exploring new technologies that can enhance the performance of historic or new buildings; and cultivating the skills and goals that are second nature to real estate developers in the staffs of builders, craftspeople, preservation and design firms to prepare them for creative approaches to finding and keeping work in a very rough economy.”

One of the conference highlights is a session called “Mayors and Sustainability Policy,” which will be moderated by Peter Harkness, founder and publisher emeritus of Governing magazine. “They will discuss local policies that support green building practices,” says Hayward. “Increasingly, we find that mayors throughout the U.S. are taking a leadership role to increase energy efficiency, pedestrian friendliness and downtown revitalization by creating innovative local policies.”

Another highlight is a talk by Steven W. Semes, academic director of the Rome Studies Program at the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture and author of The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation (W. W. Norton, 2009).

Chicago also provides a rich backdrop for historical tours, all scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the Frank Lloyd Wright tour and the tour of the restoration of the First United Methodist Church. The IIT Campus tour takes a look at Mies and Modernism and there’s also a bus tour of Chicago’s architectural highlights.

The winners of the 2010 Palladio Awards will present their projects. The commercial presentations are scheduled for Thursday morning, followed by the residential presentations in the afternoon.
