Smyrna Opera House
The Smyrna Opera House was constructed in 1867 and expanded in 1878. Fire destroyed the third floor and bell tower in 1948. The second floor originally housed a theatre and other public spaces, but it stood vacant for many years. After determining feasibility, reconstruction and adaptive use of the old building plus needed support facilities - stairs, elevator, mechanical equipment, toilets, kitchen - were phased with fund-raising efforts. Analysis indicated that window replacement was a better choice than repair, based on both initial cost and long term performance. Marvin fabricated the windows to match the original. Learn more.

Farm Villa
The custom built residence, sited among rolling fields, nearby mountains, and wooded trails, is the perfect retreat for a family that enjoys hiking, horseback riding, swimming, and skiing. The home's design was influenced by the Vermont farmhouse tradition as well as by the owners' Swedish heritage and minimalist style. The line between rustic and formal is blurred, yet the detail and craft are extremely refined. Proportion, scale and type of windows are integral to the success of the design. The windows also contribute to the house’s energy efficiency, helping to achieve Energy Star qualification and 15% less energy consumption than that prescribed by code. Learn more.

Victorian Conversion
Originally built as a single family house, the structure had suffered a series of serious compromises by being altered to a rooming house in the 1950's, and then into five poorly subdivided apartments in the 1960's. The still discernible beauty of the underlying spaces and proportions, however, suggested a creative solution. Proportions, windows and doors "make" the spaces in this residence. Vertically scaled windows and 9' French doors are appropriate to the high ceilings. Equally important were energy considerations. Antiquated counterweighted single glazed windows were replaced with weathertight, clad, double glazed and coated windows which improved occupant comfort and slashed energy usage. Learn more.
