Façade Renovation

Kopelov Cut Stone quarried and fabricated the original brownstone for this historic façade renovation: 690 Market St., San Francisco.

At Kopelov Cut Stone, Inc. we specialize in custom stone fabrication for historic renovation projects and historically-inspired new construction. Owners Labe Kopelov and Kino Kopelov are involved in every phase of production from design, site visits, shop drawings, cutting, and carving—to shipping. Personalized service and excellent communication insure the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of each order.

We focus on producing historically accurate stone finishes: margined, line-tooled, split, pitched, bush-hammered, profiled, and carved. Our first choice is to use the original stone, because this provides the best match, and preserves the integrity and aesthetic value of older buildings. We make every effort to research this original stone and to seek permission to quarry limited amounts for a project, if possible. We focus on producing historically accurate stone finishes: margined, line-tooled, split, pitched, bush-hammered, profiled, and carved. “State of the Art 1895.” At our shop in Bernalillo, New Mexico, we use a combination of modern and “historic” machinery to cut large quarry blocks into the finished products. The wire-saw and 64” bridge saw are used to cut the blocks to specific dimensions, which are then finished using planers, lathes, and hand and pneumatic carving tools. Our small belt-driven Cincinnati planer was built in the late 1800’s, and is still in fine condition.

We carve architectural elements in limestone, marble, and soft sandstone, using domestic stone whenever possible. These may be incorporated into entranceways, window and door surrounds, fireplace façades, landscape groups, and monuments. We can work from molds and templates, or create carvings using photographs or historical records.

Recent projects: residential fireplaces, sills, gateways, landscape features; Roosevelt Park, Albuquerque; Federal Courthouse, Santa Fe; Chronicle Building, San Francisco (fabricator for façade renovation).
