The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America has announced the five recipients of this year’s Arthur Ross Awards for excellence in the Classical tradition. Now in its 29th year, the awards program was launched by Arthur Ross, chairman of Classical America at the time, and Henry Hope Reed, the organization’s president. The awards will be presented at an awards ceremony and celebratory dinner on Monday, May 3, 2010, at New York City’s University Club.
This year, awards will be presented to the following: Historical Concepts, Peachtree City, GA, for Architecture; Foundation de Coubertin/Saint-Jacques Artisans Workshop, Saint-Remy-les-Chevreuse, France/Chicago/Illinois for Artisanship; Sanchez & Maddux, Palm Beach, FL, for Landscape Architecture; Boyd Reath, New York, NY, for Painting/Mural Painting; Monticello/Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Charlottesville, VA, for Stewardship; along with a special Board of Directors honor, which transcends category, for Calder Roth of Richmond, VA.

With the exception of advocacy categories – patronage and stewardship – the awards recognize a body of work, rather than single projects, and all are open to individuals, firms and organizations from the United States and abroad. Since its inception, the awards program has rewarded architects, artists, craftspeople, landscape designers, conservationists, educators, publishers, patrons and more. Past recipients include architects John Milner, Allan Greenberg, Alvin Holm; landscape designer Perry Guillot; artisans Historical Arts & Casting and Chris Pellettieri; and Daryl and Robert Davis, founders of Seaside, FL.
The 2010 winners were selected from more than 109 entries in ten categories by a jury chaired by Barbara Sallick and coordinated by Brian Connolly. The jurors included Steven Hendricks, Peter Pennoyer, Suzanne Rheinstein, Suzanne Santry, Richard Sammons, Greg Shue, Willian vanden Heuval and Russell Windham.
“We had our work cut out for us,” says Sallick. “The standard was high throughout and the deliberations were very serious. As this year’s winners emerged, the jury was confident that many more applicants are deserving and hope that all will be recognized in the years to come.”
This year’s awards are sponsored by Zeluck Inc., and Xhema Construction, and underwritten in part by R.D. Rice Construction. All proceeds go towards furthering the Institute’s educational programs for architects and allied artisans.
